US CA: All Fire, No Smoke For Nipomo
New Times, 25 Aug 2010 - Even if a proposed marijuana dispensary fully complied with county ordinances, it seemed unlikely on Aug. 24 that San Luis Obispo County Supervisors would have allowed it in a community that didn't want one. In fact, community members who spoke out against the proposed dispensary said such a facility is unnecessary in a market already saturated with product.
US CO: Edu: Editorial: Smell The Reefer, CSU
The Rocky Mountain Collegian, 25 Aug 2010 - It shouldn't surprise anyone, but CSU has fallen way behind our dirty hippy friends over at CU-Boulder in terms of forward thinking on medical pot regulations. In April, the school decided to waive the requirement that freshmen students must live in the dorms for students who have a legal medical marijuana card. Marijuana, obviously, is still banned in the dorms, but CU-Boulder came to terms with the fact that forcing students who have a legal right to a legal medicine to forgo using that medicine in their homes just wasn't hip.

US DC: Column: Is Marijuana Legalization Finally On The March
Washington Times, 13 Jul 2010 - ELKINS, West. Va. (7/13/10) -- Apparently the latest scary thing that the kids are doing is smoking something called "K2," which this recent New York Times article describes as "a blend of herbs treated with synthetic marijuana." By packaging K2 as "incense," purveyors "have managed to evade federal regulation," so the stuff is widely, legally available. Only eight states have passed laws banning it to date, and, as soon as bans pass, chemists can quickly sidestep them by making minor tweaks at the molecular level. Is it dangerous? The man who designed K2--for laboratory research purposes--says its "effects in humans have not been studied and [it] could very well have toxic effects." Apparently so: implicated in one death so far (albeit a suicide, not an overdose), K2 is sending to emergency rooms and poison control centers more and more people who, while not necessarily at risk of dying, don't seem to be enjoying the trip.

The commissioners heard from four people -- including two primary caregivers -- who urged them to regulate the growing of medical marijuana rather than ban it. But commissioners said they were concerned about allowing the production of a material that is illegal under federal law, and there has been confusion over a measure passed this year by the Colorado Legislature.
