Detroit Free Press, 27 Aug 2010 - Prosecutor Says Clinics Sold Illegally Fifteen people are in the Oakland County Jail, and more arrests may be coming in the state's first major crackdown on medical marijuana distributors. The Oakland County Sheriff's Narcotics Enforcement team raided three businesses and 12 homes Wednesday and confiscated marijuana, $30,000 in cash, guns, grow lights, patient records and two guard alligators, authorities said Thursday.

Two of the applications are for a dispensary in Sanford. Last Friday, Aug. 20, was the deadline for the second round of applications for medical marijuana dispensaries.

There probably are some people who would benefit by being able to inhale the now-illegal substance, said Will Humble, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services. These include those who have nausea from chemotherapy and individuals who need an appetite stimulant to keep from wasting away.

(7/13/10) -- Apparently the latest scary thing that the kids are doing is smoking something called "K2," which this recent New York Times article describes as "a blend of herbs treated with synthetic marijuana." By packaging K2 as "incense," purveyors "have managed to evade federal regulation," so the stuff is widely, legally available. Only eight states have passed laws banning it to date, and, as soon as bans pass, chemists can quickly sidestep them by making minor tweaks at the molecular level. Is it dangerous? The man who designed K2--for laboratory research purposes--says its "effects in humans have not been studied and [it] could very well have toxic effects." Apparently so: implicated in one death so far (albeit a suicide, not an overdose), K2 is sending to emergency rooms and poison control centers more and more people who, while not necessarily at risk of dying, don't seem to be enjoying the trip.

The Tribune, 13 Jul 2010 - An ordinance that would ban the growing of medical marijuana in unincorporated areas of Weld County passed on second reading Monday, but Weld County commissioners want to conduct another work session on the issue before it comes up for final approval. The commissioners heard from four people -- including two primary caregivers -- who urged them to regulate the growing of medical marijuana rather than ban it. But commissioners said they were concerned about allowing the production of a material that is illegal under federal law, and there has been confusion over a measure passed this year by the Colorado Legislature.
